Always in the forefront of the Rotary Club of Dubuque focus is the development of the community. During both, good and not so good economic times, Dubuque has always looked ahead to the future and the Rotary organization has always reflected optimism about this outlook. An example of how Rotary can assist in the development of our community is the pledge made by the club three years ago to raise $50,000.00 to assist in the construction of a pavilion along the proposed Mississippi River Walk Development project. Since the time of the pledge, several Rotary projects have enabled considerable funds to be raised and the club hopes to reach it's goal well ahead of a 5 year time line. The pavilion would serve as an example of how the Rotarians can help develop their community. Several years ago a project was launched by the Rotary Club of Dubuque to meet the need of educating school children about the dangers of fire, particularly in the home. Following two years of planning, fundraising, research and hard work, the club was able to construct a portable-miniature home model, which displayed actual fire dangers, and the ways children could react to the dangers and escape safely. Since completion of the fire safety project, the unit has been displayed all over the county at schools, churches, county fairs and other sites and thousand of residents have toured the unit and learned from it's special features. This project was especially appreciated by local and county firefighters who have cooperated by donating many volunteer hours to completing the project and helping to carrying out its goals and purposes. This project incorporated community development and human service at it's best in the Rotary tradition of "Service above Self". The Rotary Club of
Dubuque invites community residents and organizations to contact them
with ideas and suggestions about potential projects in the Human Service
and Community Development areas. Suggestions are invited in writing by
sending them to: Barry
