November 17, 2009: Speaker this week was Iowa Works One- Stop Center's Peggy Murray. Iowa Works and it's local subsidiary, Dubuque Works, is an excellent initiative for Dubuque. It's a comprehensive employment readiness facility. Not only does it endeavor to optimize the workforce data, matching abilities with jobs, but it provides certification of workers that enables employers to find the appropriate skill sets it needs thereby saving time, money and resources. It should come as no surprise to Dubuque businesses that a significant labor shortage is looming. It seems impossible to imagine in light of current economic woes. But all workforce studies, taking into account changing demographics, the shrinking of a young and able population, have revealed that there will be a shortage of workers with even the most basic communication skills not to mention technical and computer skills. Something obviously has to be done about it. This organization is the first critical step.
Audiophiles Please Take Note: We are now offering our meeting recordings in MP3 file format. This audio file should behave like any other audio file in most up-to-date browsers (playing almost instantly), but you can also download this file into your resident MP3 music folder (right click and choose "Save target as," and point the download directly to that folder on your computer). Once it resides on your computer, your MP3 software (like iTunes) will treat it as a music or podcast file allowing you to add it to a playlist, audio database, etc. from which you can download the file into your iPod, Zune, or similar portable audio device. Give it a try and let us know how it works for you. This obviously is a shakedown cruise, but it was requested by a member, and that's the kind of feedback we always look for. Otherwise how can we improve? - Gary O. |

November 10, 2009: Perhaps one of the best updates we've ever had on what's going on at The Finley Hospital. CEO John Knox and Finley Foundation's Dan McCarthy did the program with help from their new executive director of the Finley Foundation Paul Pelletier (pictured below) on visuals. It was really interesting, and we have it recorded for you if you missed the meeting or want to simply hear it again. Program chair is Brent Johns right.

October 20, 2009: Gerald Retzlaff (here with Brent Johns) is our Rotary District Governor who came calling this week to tell us about the state of the district. It should come as no surprise that we are one of the leading clubs in our district, and we were lauded for our growth in membership and success in fund-raising. He provided some interesting insights into the Rotary International organization's ongoing effort to eradicate polio across the globe.

May 26 , 2009: Program: Colts Drum Corps and our fellow Rotarian, Greg Orwoll. The organization does so much more than raise the musical bar for these fine young people. The mentoring relationships, learning to work in a cohesive team environment, and a long list of life's skils are transferred to these students as they compete for glory. And that glory is easily shared with Dubuque because the Colts are true ambassadors of our community. Click on the button in the box to hear the entire meeting and a concert by one of the leading percussionists in the Colts organization. |

 |
| Hello Rotarians,
Well, my year as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar is winding down and I wanted to send one more email before my return.
My experience has proven extremely fruitful and I am unable to enumerate the enriching experiences, friendly faces, and Rotary-centered events/projects that I have soaked in. Spending a year in India under the auspices of Rotary International has indelibly changed my life for the better. I was able to broaden my cultural horizons, engage in meaningful work through Rotary, and make advances on my PhD studies. Although Luke Juran may have left Iowa one year ago, a different Luke Juran will be returning.
I arrive in Iowa on June 1st and I look forward to attending Rotary meetings and giving presentations. I already have one presentation arranged with the Dubuque club, and I’m ready to fill the slate at other clubs as well. Also, Kanchana Srinivasan, a friend of mine, has written an article about my Ambassadorial Scholar experience and we plan to submit it to various levels of Rotary (International, India, USA, and host and sponsor districts).
Thanks for all the individual and collective support from Rotary and I look forward to being a long-term partner in Rotary’s missions.
Best,
Luke Juran

From Our Ambassadorial Scholar in India |

Hello Rotarians,
Last night I celebrated World Understanding Day and Rotary's birthday with the Rotary Club of Madras Midtown. It truly was a night of international flavors as many parts of the world were present for the betterment of world understanding: Rtn. Maria Cristina Maques (current GSE team leader from Dist. 4620 in Brazil); Rtn. Ramanatha Rao (next year's GSE team leader to Mexico from Dist. 3230); Ms. Emily Sargent Beasley (from the American International School of Chennai); Rtn. Chuck Sawicki and his wife Priscilla (visiting Rotarians from Dist. 7680 in North Carolina); and yours truly from Dist. 5970 in Iowa.
We had a great time sharing our international experiences and attempting to bridge cultural gaps in a way that fosters peace and understanding. We also celebrated the fact that “Slumdog Millionaire” was awarded eight Oscars and that it too provided understanding between India and the rest of the world, as well as between the rich and the poor.

February 17 , 2009 Katrina Wilberding, representing Proudly Accessible Dubuque, spoke on how area businesses are leading the way nationally in providing accessibility to those among us who have mobility requirements. It's a lot more than just providing handicapped parking spaces or wheelchair ramps. Katrina brought along her service dog, Leon (below). Katrina serves on the Dubuque Human Rights Commission, and she has taught many, many people in our community how to live relatively independently. |
Of course she now consults with businesses in our area in how to navigate through the maze of regulations that are part and parcel of the Americans with Disabilities Act. But she educates businesses on how providing for those with disabilities should not be considered just an expense but an investment that will attract more customers or expand your talent pool for hiring. And among working adults in Dubuque County, 14% of the population deals with a disability. That's 22,000 people. Forty percent of our 1.5 million tourists visiting our area in a year travel with a disabled person. |

Luke Juran's parents, Rick and Laurie Juran, are just back from India where they attended the wedding of their son in January. Luke's parents live in Dyersville, and they brought back all kinds of cool stuff as souvenirs of their trip. Luke, of course, is our Rotary Club Ambassadorial Scholar. We are so proud of him, his parents received a standing ovation from the club when they approached the lectern. They shared details about their trip, and Luke's projects that include the famous "Passing the Goat" that employs livestock (goats), to raise Indian family's income potential as goats are raised, mostly by females, milked and harvested for their meat, but not until the goats' offspring are passed to other families in the village to expand the economy and well-being of the community. It's a remarkable project, and the goats, explains Rick and Laurie, actually thrive in the hot, dusty and rock strewn countryside. "They eat just about anything," explains Rick. |

January 27, 2009 Holy cow! We had the Dean of the Henry B. Tippie College of Business at The University of Iowa, Curt Hunter, here with colleague Tami Bauman and our own Brent Johns. As a consequence of his lecture on the economy, all Rotarians now have three credits they can apply to an MBA. How thoughtful. Actually, he was quite interesting, and according to his best educated estimates, if you're going to be living anywhere in this nation during a severe economic downturn, it's probably best to be in Iowa. But we knew that. Listen to the audio by clicking on the media logo in the box. |

| We inducted Jerry Lazore into Rotary Club, and to show us how inspired he is to be a member, he wore his golf shirt he won last fall at our Rotary Golf Outing. How classy. Welcome aboard Jerry. Luke and Daliya's Wedding in India and
We've Got the Photos! |
|
Hello All,
January 13 th was the big wedding day; the ceremony and reception took place in Pallikuttumma, Alleppey, Kerala.
Daliya and I are both Catholics, so we had a church wedding—but there were definitely some cultural nuances. We had decorated wedding cars, two beautiful flower girls, and a professional choir. The mass was said in Malayalam (the language of Kerala), with only the vows being stated in English. I wore a suit to both the ceremony and reception, while Daliya wore a white wedding dress to the ceremony and a sari to the reception (a sari is the traditional women's garment in South Asia; I had to purchase a special sari for Daliya to be given as part of the wedding ceremony). We exchanged wedding rings, but the main symbolic part of ceremony consisted of a series of other gestures. First, I placed a large, gold chain around Daliya's neck. Then, I tied a thali (a special wedding pendant) around her neck on seven silk strands that had been taken from the sari that I gave her. I had to tie the strands around Daliya's neck in a particular knot that was taught to me the previous day—so I guess you can say that I literally “tied the knot.” Next, I placed a sari over her head and later transferred it to her arm. After the mass, Daliya changed from her dress into her sari and we arrived at the reception hall together. We lit an oil lamp, cut the wedding cake, and fed each other a piece—but we were also fed by each other's parents. We had large floral garlands placed around our necks and we drank coconut juice together from the same coconut (Kerala is famous for coconuts).
It was a wonderful event and I'm blessed that my parents were able to come all the way from cold, cold Iowa for the special day (while we were enjoying 80 degree weather, Iowa was setting record lows around -30 degrees). My Mother was excited to wear a sari complete with bangles and a bindi (the traditional dot that many Indian women wear on their forehead). There were about 600 guests in attendance and it was truly a joyous occasion.
One last interesting note… instead of “you may kiss the bride,” the Christian weddings in India state that you may “shake hands with the bride”!
Best,
Luke & Daliya

January 13 , 2009 Speaker and investment counselor, Richard G. Ehr, spoke to the Rotary Club on Iowa's 529/ College Savings Plan. If you're looking for a convenient, tax-advantaged way to help your child, grandchild, other relative, or friend afford college. What you invest in this type of college fund, created by the State of Iowa, is protected from taxes, and that just might be incentive enough to get involved. Learn more about it on the audio. |

| We had a badge swap ceremony in which one of our esteemed new members, Ginger Stakis, received her permanent engraved badge. The tradition is that new members are given this big red badge they must wear which is replaced by a permanent (and far more attractive) badge upon completion of 10 tasks. They are fairly easy tasks relative to other things we used to make new members do, acts that are now prohibited by law in 25 states including Iowa. Ahh, the good old days. Things went to heck when we started allowing lawyers to join Rotary. |

Hello Rotarians,
I just returned from Colombo, Sri Lanka, where I visited two clubs from District 3220. I met and exchanged flags with the Rotary Club of Colombo Central and then moved on to participate in a project with the Rotary Club of Colombo Uptown. The project involved providing a day of fun for a daycare that serves orphans, the destitute, and the children of drug addicts. The children were given a full meal, juice, chocolate milk, and plenty of games and songs were played. The event, which took place a couple days before Christmas, climaxed when Santa Claus himself entered the daycare and handed a present to each child. The children also entertained us with some Sri Lankan and Western dances that they had diligently practiced in advance. It was a very touching day!

Last week was the installation of a new Interact Club at St. Antony's School (photo above). The high school section of the school is reserved for girls (to lessen the education gap between men and women), so the Interact Club is all female. Furthermore, St. Antony's is a government run school, which means that it is free and serves the poor (many students come to school without shoes). The event was wonderful and included a speech from the new Interact president, the District Governor Elect of District 3230, and the president of an all women's Rotary Club here in Chennai. The students were taught about the Rotary Four-Way Test, and attached is a photo of the unveiling of the Four-Way Test board at the school. What makes the Interact Club even more special is that the school is right by my house—a mere stone's throw away!
In other news, the “Passing on the Goat” program is in full swing and is less than four weeks away. Everything is arranged and I have procured some additional donors who will donate about 5-10 goats in addition to the Dubuque Club's great contribution of 98 goats. Look to hear from me soon…
In Rotary,

Okay, get ready for the best photo on the page. Maria Halenbeck and her dad, Jim. Meanwhile, congratulations to Jim on the extraordinary job he did with the Salvation Army Kettle Drive this year. It looks like a good year for the Salvation Army despite the economic situation thanks to community organizations like ours. Excellent member, excellent project, and have we looked into cloning this guy? Wait, let's make Maria a member. Done. If you're planning a trip somewhere and you attend a Rotary Club meeting anywhere in the world, you should have a pennant with you from our club. Just ask Kent Renier. He'll provide you with as many as you think you need. And don't forget to bring one back! |

Meeting Audio

December 15, 2009: The Magical Madrigal Singers from Senior High School feature some of the best voices in the area. Dubuque Senior has become a school in which fledgling artists can spread their wings. We have an extraordinary performance tape as part of our regular audio recording of the meeting. We used our state-of-the-art microphone and sound mixing system to get the best results. Enjoy and have a Merry Christmas.
- Gary O. |

| Having met the requirements of a new member to Rotary Club, Dr. Ted Murray received his permanent badge. Congratulations! |

December 8, 2009: Sr Pat Farrell with Gary Gansemer. She spoke of the world's water crisis, and how Rotary Club is helping those in developing countries find the stuff of life. Even in our own country we are experiencing water shortages of a profound nature. Arizona imports nearly all of its water from out of state. New Mexico is not far behind. It helps drive the message home that water is more important than oil, and, in fact, we are currently fighting wars over oil. Could wars over water be far behind?

Get ready for Santa Cash! |
Posters are available and the goal is to sell 250 tickets at $100 each. The grand prize is $10,000. Odds are pretty good you'll win. And if you don't get the ten grand, you still win because the money raised by Rotarians directly benefits our community. Pat Udelack is the chair. See her and her committee members for tickets to sell. C'mon, let's make this a huge success!

| Big news this week was the announcement that Sue Wheaton is taking over the helm of the Dubuque Area Red Cross with the retirement of Stan Schwartz. Sue will be joining Rotary Club once again, and Stan has decided upon his retirement that he is staying in the area and will remain a member of our organization. The pair are being congratulated by Gary Gansemer left. Speaking of Gary Gansemer, read below. |

Dear Friends,
First and foremost SWLD members express profound appreciations to the Rotarians of Morogoro and Dubuque for it is through your unrelenting efforts that the water predicaments being experienced in some rural communities in Morogoro will be definitely alleviated. In his last email, Mr. Gary (Gansemer) said, "Let us start digging." We mail to inform you that digging is about to start. Beside other procurement and mobilization activities, one primary antecedent to digging is manufacturing of the concrete materials for ring well constructions.
This phase has just been concluded. Mr. Raphael, RC Morogoro General Secretary, was at the production site today to see the manufactured materials (pictures are attached). By the beginning of next week materials for the works will be transferred to the three first beneficiary rural communities, and immediately commences digging. SWLD assures that all those involved will be fully informed, with pictures of every stage of the work sent.
Thanking you all again for your prayers and contributions.

November 3, 2009: Gary Dophin, the voice of the Iowa Hawkeyes, made his perennial visit to our club to rumminate on the outstanding win record the Iowa football team and to do a little prognosticating on the fate of Iowa's basketball team. This is one of the best, most entertaining audio files you will every listen to. Sitting to Dolph's left is superfan from Dubuque Mike Noonan.

| We love to induct new members, and here's Julie Flores and her sponsor, B'Ann Ditmar. |
And we also love Paul Harris inductees. Kent Renier (pictured with Barry Bromberg who made the presentation) is now a Paul Harris Plus member (more than one contribution), and with that honor goes the privilege of bestowing a Paul Harris Award on someone not a member of the club but one who does a lot of wonderful things in our community. That person he chose was his friend since childhood, Donald Howes (below) with their spouses, and further below with our president and District Governor pictured.

October 6, 2009: John Woodin, retired Fine Arts Curriculum Director for Dubuque Schools had a wonderful program on mature adults who have rediscovered (and in some cases discovered) the instrumental musician within. It's a delightful idea, and some members of our club have already enrolled in this nationally recognized program that is gaining momentum in Dubuque with its affiliation with the Northeast Iowa School of Music in Dubuque. |

| So Kent Renier, standing with our president, Doug Pearce, goes on vacation with Wally Brown and their spouses to the beautiful Rocky Mountains, and Park City Utah was among their stops. Being the good Rotarian Kent is, he suggested to Wally that they attend a Rotary Club meeting in Park City. The report on their visit was quite interesting. It's on the recording for the September 1 meeting. Remember, we have flags like this you can take with you if you anticipate attending a Rotary Club meeting while on business or pleasure in just about every country in the world. |
August 11th, 2009: Program: Our guest describes a fantastic program to help those in our community who need help an opportunity to better prepare their homes for winter's onslaught. Sponsors of the program are underwriting the costs of putting film on windows, weather stripping and caulking door and windows frames, and even installing smoke alarms. All they
need are volunteer teams to install them on a Saturday in October (the Hawks are playing an away game). Let's get some teams together to get involved in this worthwhile effort. Listen to the audio. Remember that the photos on this page are linked to printable versions. |

April 7, 2009
Hello Rotarians!
As promised, I just returned from some villages outside of Madurai (Tamil Nadu, India) to check on the goats that were distributed in January. The Rotary Club of Dubuque generously donated $2,000 (the equivalent of 78 goats) to poor women who are members of Mahasemam (a microcredit organization). Additionally,12 goats were donated from my family and friends to comprise a total of 90 goats. I can readily say that the goats are doing well and that the women are extremely happy and grateful.
I attached six short interviews of women involved in the "Passing on the Goat" program. Click here to download the Impact Study.
- -The first three interviews are from the recipients of the Dubuque Rotary Club's donation (the goats have only been in the village for less than three months, so they haven't had time to procreate yet--although some are currently pregnant).
- The fourth interview is with a woman who has been in the program since 2006, so she has had the opportunity to pass on a goat.
- The fifth interview is with a woman who is awaiting a goat in the near future
- The sixth interview is with a woman who has been given a goat in the past.
Through these interviews I hope you will be able to see the stages, success, and sustainability of the program. Your donation has gone a long way toward improving the lives women and families 8,000 miles from Iowa.
Best,

March 17, 2009 Our guest, Liz Gerber,
was from Highland Illinois Community College just across the river, and we learned quite a lot about this important educational resource and how it's contributing to our Tri-State economy and employment profile. Guess what Rotarian in our club is an alum of distinction from this college? B'Ann Ditmar! |
 |
| The Godfather visited our meeting to encourage participation in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Seminar. It apparently worked. Attendence exceeded everyone's expectations. |
 |
| New badges were distributed to these fine members who have accomplished their immediate goals set out for new members. |

March 10, 2009 Jane McCall and Melody Heber came to present information on the new capital campaign for new facilities at the Dubuque Area Humane Society. Alas, they've outgrown their facilities, and to fulfill their mission, they must find new digs. You know, it's interesting what the Dubuque Area Humane Society brings to our community in terms of quality of life, not just for animals but for human beings, too! The point is, a community's quality of life can be measured by how it takes care of its animals. I don't t hink there would be any argurment that Jane (a Rotarian by the way), has made a trememdous contribution to the quality of this organization and it certainly is worthy of our support. Above, Mike Seyer presents a check to Jane for $5,000 toward one of their worthwhile projects. |
 |
|
March 3, 2009: This was a great program, Pedals for Progress, and our guest was Tim Weitzel. The concept is simple, really. There are tons of bikes in people's garages and basements that are not being used. Why not collect them and send them to third world countries where they can provide much needed mobility to people needing to get from home to a job or where the work is? This is a success story you must hear about. Click on the audio button. In the photo above is Brent Johns (program chair) and his student shadow for the day, Luke Murphy. |
Carl Braun was a guest of Mike Seyer. |
Guest of Jennifer Moen was David Jansen. |
Grant Recipient with Mike Seyer is Sister Carol Karwoski. |
Kristen Woodward, Two-By-Two Animals, received a grant check, as well. The money will be used for books and educational materials. |

February 10, 2009 What a special meeting we had this week! Dave Buck was here to talk about Rotary's battle against the spread of polio in the world. The fight is not over, but as an international service organization, we've made tremendous strides in the eradication of the disease. We apologize for not having an audio file of the meeting this week. Technical difficulties were the cause. |

January 20, 2009 We had School Board member George Davis and Kim Swift (Principal of Senior High). They endeavored to explain the complexities of school financing and the importance of the upcoming Instructional Support Levy before the voters on February 3rd. There was a spirited Q & A session, but bottom line is, a Yes vote on the ISL will not raise taxes, and it allows the district increased spending authority to avail itself of other avenues for school financing from the State of Iowa. If you are really hankering for a better explanation than this, perhaps you should visit the website: Tax Facts. |

January 6 , 2009 Central Alternative High School's Tim Ebeling brought two of his research students to Rotary Club this past week. Cody Skahill and Brandon Robey gave brief samples of their research on the 1930s. The parallels of the Great Depression and our own Great Recession were too irresistable, but it's not just about economics. The 1930s represented the dawn of the modern age in terms of mass production, industrial design, and advances in electronics, plastics, and even media (television was invented in this decade. It's actually fascinating to see these young students discover the signficance that is the 1930s. Several of our senior members who actually lived during the '30s and remember them well, approached the students at the end of the meeting to provide leads to more research. |

We inducted a new member this week. Joe Moss was awarded his Rotary Club pin by Terry Kouba his sponsor. He has four children, and he's employed at Alliant Energy. He's active in Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Boy Scouts and Junior Achievement among other things. His acceptance comments are precious. Hear them on the audio file in the right column. |
Visiting Rotarian, Pat Udzieliak, attended our meeting, and get ready for this, she announced she is spending more time in Dubuque, so she's joining our club. |
Santa Cash Winner receives $10,000! and we have the funniest audio of a meeting yet! |
|
The winner's of this year's Santa Cash Drawing is Leona Breitbach of Dubuque. Listen to the audio file of the meeting (below) in which we call her. |
Photographed here with her husband Francis and their two dogs (Sparkle and Daisy) the Breitbachs are holding a check for $10,000. The Breitbachs coincidentally are the in-laws of Rotarian, Gary Olsen. Gary had purchased the ticket in Leona's name as a Christmas gift. He called his mother-in-law within seconds of our Channel 7 guest, Ron Steele's drawing of the lucky number (below). The phone call, broadcast throughout the room on the PA system, was a riot! You'll simply have to listen to the audio file. It's very very funny. Congratulations to the Breitbach's for having such a thoughtful son-in-law. |

December 23, 2008 Below right , the ticket sales were fast and furious during the last moments before the official Santa Cash drawing. You could buy a 25% share in a single $100 ticket and cash was flying around the room. You would think we were the Greyhound Park Casino (thanks to Joey Anderson for the barrel by the way). Last minute sales really helped our revenue on this project. Above, our guest, Ron Steele, anchor and veteran newscaster in Eastern Iowa on KWWL, Channel 7, spoke to Rotary at this meeting, and he had a lot to say about the state of television broadcasting. It is a business that is in transition, yet audience numbers are at an all time high, reported Ron. Revenue is harder and harder to grow, however, due to the enormous competition for available advertising dollars, according to Ron. Nonetheless, the station is bracing for the mandated transition to all digital telecasting in February, which will mean better picture, better sound, and what he calls "the availability of sub-channels" that may contain all news, all weather, or local programming of some sort. |
Speaking of flags, now this is a flag! Mike Seyer brought this one back from Belize. It smelled of citrus and coconut suntan lotion. Hmmmmmm... |
 |
| Dave Solberg, here with his spouse, Diane, received Paul Harris honors at the December 16th meeting of Rotary. Barry Bromberg presides over the presentation. |

| Guests included Dave Flanagan, a colleague of Rob Apel's at Capital Meyers Cox. |

| Here's a lovely photo of Jeanne and David Moessner. Happy Holidays! We love when members bring their spouses. Okay everyone, let's sing, "We are Fammmm-i-ly...!" |
Oh, my gosh, it's Fun & Frolicmeister, Jerry Trimble. He sings an original song for us just for the holiday season. Listen to the audio for December 22 above left column. You will howl. |
Mike Brannon told a lovely story about his father-in-law who went deer hunting, didn't shoot a deer but hit one with his car on the way home.

Hello Rotarians, Yes, I am ok and have been unaffected by the events in Mumbai. It has been raining nonstop for two days in Chennai. I have been stranded in my house for two days due to the floods and there has also been no power at my home for two days. I have enough food and water and will be ok for a couple more days. I am writing from my laptop that has satellite internet so I am thus able to contact you. These photos I've sent you are of the “Well Women Comprehensive Health Checkup” project that was a great success. Roughly 250-300 poor women attained free health checkups comprising of a diabetes test, blood pressure check, ECG, mammogram, and other crucial health checks. A toll-free number was set up for women to make appointments in advance. Over 200 appointments were scheduled and an additional 50-100 women arrived that day. An Interact Club also volunteered to help with registration. Service and fellowship prevailed in the truly humanitarian atmosphere! In the smaller photo above, “Children's Day” was celebrated across India. The Rotary Club of Velachery and I attended the celebrations at St. Anthony's School, where there was singing, dancing, and prizes distributed for an oratory competition. An Interact Club will be started there in January. -- Luke (Email me!)
