| Will Pearsall was a guest of Glenn Lichti. Will was featured in a front page article in the Telegraph Herald on Monday for the mural he painted at the Dubuque Rescue Mission. It is truly a magnificent work that was inspired by the Great Depression art of the 1930s and the artists that sustained their art thanks to the WPA (Works Progress Administration). Will is an accomplished painter and graphic designer. |
Guess who sold more Santa Cash Tickets this year than any other member? Bill Kuttler. And for his effort he was awarded a special limited edition art print inspired by the Rotary Club's efforts in improving the world (below). Congratulations Bill! How many tickets did he sell? Danny Dolter $2500, Norma Renier $1,000, Crescent Community Health Center $1,000, Jeff Timmerman and DB&T Group $500, and the grand prize winner was Eric Hilbun (pictured at right) who won the $5,000. |

But the soon to be 16 year-old, pictured here with her host mom, Shawn Bromen, on right and our Youth Exchange coordinator, Kimberly Burrows, provided us with some lovely annecdotal narrative that charmed the Rotary Club members and guests. You can listen to her presentation by merely clicking on the appropriate button at right. The MP3 file (bottom) can be downloaded into your iPod, iPad, or whatever portable music device you own. And remember, the photos on this page are linked automatically to printable enlargements suitable for printing on your Hewlett Packard and framing. |

| Above the photo features all of our students including Matias Alverez and Julia Nunez Ribot. |
Jerry Trimble wrote an original song that has become a fave of Rotary Club, and he reprised it for us this time but accompanied by a ukelele or a very small guitar... whichever. Meanwhile, it became apparent that Jerry only knew one chord on the instrument, but he played it with the expertise of a seasoned musician. Of course the seasoning was sugar and that's why Jerry is so sweet. Nice effort Mr. Trimble. He raised a nice wad of cash for Rotary Scholarships in the process. |
 |
| Our newest member, Glenn Lichti, retiree from John Deere, is pictured here getting pinned by our president, Kent Renier, and flanked by his sponsor, Tim Moothhart. Thanks for bringing this wonderful and funny gentleman to our fold. |

 |
| October 18, 2011 Gary Olsen on the set of Kids in the Kitchen at Hy-Vee Asbury Plaza, one of the national award winning cable shows that Gary produces for the Dubuque Community Schools. Gary came to Rotary with a new project he's been working on with KWWL TV called Farmers' Market TV. Gary has been active in the "Local Foods Movement" in Iowa having traveled to Des Moines to lobby legislators on behalf of local growers. Less than 20% of the food that is served on the typical Iowa family's table is actually grown in Iowa. "This is ironic since we are known as an agricultural state," says Olsen. To see the pilot episode that Gary presented to Rotary, visit the Farmers Market Live TV website. Gary's idea is to have a television show featuring farmers' markets throughout Northeast Iowa. The show would combine cooking fresh finds from farmers' market, and gardening tips. |

September 20, 2011: Amy Schauer, director of RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) provided a fascinating and enticing offer to Rotarians, especially those of retirement or near retirement age. "Join us," she said, "and do some of the most rewarding work you may ever do." From teaching children to read to providing executive talent and organization skills to a non-profit that needs all the help it can get is a pretty interesting if not provocative offer. Listen to her presentation by clicking on the apppropriate button at right. Below Amy was accompanied by a representative from Visiting Nurses Association (Judy) who benefits from volunteers provided by RSVP. |

| August 16, 2011. Alyson Beytien (spouse of Rotarian Craig Beytien) presented a talk on autism that was very informative. Alyson is one of the nation's leading authorities on advocacy and therapy for austism spectrum children and adults. She has written articles and tours the country on this very critical topic that is not without some controversy. Remember the "innoculations tied to autism report later found to be supported by totally inaccurate data and data gathering methods in England some years ago? You simply must listen to the audio presented here because the introductionof Alyson by her huband Craig (photographed below) is not to be missed. |

| Helen Kilgore was a guest Rotarian this week. Welcome Helen. |
 |
| August 2, 2011 We had a wonderful vocational talk this meeting. Scott Schneider spoke to us about his career, his personal history, and his passion for community theater. What character has he played the most? Hamlet? Puck? Willy Loman? Nope. It's a priest... usually in a comedy involving a bevy of nuns, and almost always a comedy. You simply must listen to this man's fascinating story. In some ways he is a typical Rotarian, involved in the community, but when you become a Rotarian, you notice that almost nobody is typical but unique and contributing to our collective quality of life in many special ways. |

| June 14, 2011 Bryan J. Zygmont, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Art History, Clarke University, was on hand to speak about his recent Rotary Club funded trip to Poland. Our president, Tanya Bottomley is in the middle and on the right is Anna Kelly from Clarke. As it turns out, this overseas study trip, taken with several other Rotary club sponsored teachers was part of an exchange program and you might recall the visitors from Poland we had last year about this time visiting the United States and Dubuque in particular. Bryan says he is half Polish and half Irish. Brian not only saw the beauty that is Polish art, science and history, but he got in touch with his Polish ancestor which was an marvelous thing according to Bryan. |

Fun and Frolic starred "Tanya Bottomley." Okay, this is not Tanya, and the jokes were not as good as hers, but the overall effect was hysterical. Tanya, let's hope you look better than this when you reach a certain age. Nice glasses, though. You accessorize well. |
 |
| May 10, 2011 James Anthony Nyangai from Tanzania spoke to Rotarians on the topic of water in his country. Hosted by Gary Gansemer who headed our club's effort in joining with other Rotary Clubs and the Sisters of St. Francis, here represented by Sister Pat Ferrell, we learned just how important our contributions have been to all facets of life on the African continent. When women and children have to spend hours in cues for water, they are not doing much else, like attend school. |

Sam told his life's story from his refugee status in Africa to coming to America to attend college on his family's life's savings. He settled in Iowa, met the love of his life, and his story is the American dream come true. We hear stories of success and perserverence by members of our Rotary Club family, but one of the biggest differences in Sam Yamoah's story is that live bullets were involved. It's been an amazing journey, and you can hear it first hand by clicking on one of the buttons at right. Listen to the entire meeting. |

| December 13, 2011: A wonderful tribute to Charles Dickens and A Christmas Carol was presented in the full costume of the 19th Century British author by the talented Vince Williams. His show was aided by Greg Orwoll in what turned out to be an audience participation experience. Dickens was a very popular novelist in his day. He enjoyed the equivalence of "superstardom" when compared to today's show business culture. And he got away with portraying the less hospitable and refined side of life that existed among the poor and downtrodden. Vince Williams and Dickens' classic Christmas story of a miserable skinflint that has redemption foisted upon him by ghosts from his past, present and future is a timeless tale that has much relevance today. |

| November 29, 2011: The chief executive officer of Iowa Public Radio, Mary Grace Herrington, paid us a visit. Here she is with our president, Kent Renier. Ms. Herrington provided us with an excellent overview of operations, but more importantly the recent history of Iowa Public Radio and its mergers among the Iowa Regent colleges that, at first, ran their own competing public radio studios. There was wisdom in the plan to merge these radio broadcast facilities into a single network that served to streamline operations and more importantly reduce costs. Audience numbers and so is financial support. IPR has become more popular than ever with the right mix of local origination, nationally syndicated shows like Prairie Home Companion and This American Life, and great locally produced shows like Java Blend (Iowa City), Studio One, and great news and radio documentaries. Listen to the entire meeting audio by clicking on either of the buttons in the box above. |

Above, Cindy's dog, Opal, drew the three winning tickets out of the weekly drawing basket to help raise scholarship money for area college-bound students.

| October 11, 2011Domestic violence is coming to the forefront of discussions throughout America. Violence transcends all social classes and incomes according to our presenters, Matt Zanger of the Riverview Center, and Rotarian Tim Moothart, who serves as a volunteer for the Center which is dedicated to the education and eradication of domestic violence. To deal with this problem, one must examine violence in our cultures from all aspects including violence in films and modern media, the justification of violence in cultural and religious beliefs, and the long legacy of childhood bully behaviors that have been tolerated as some sort of acceptable "right of passage." How and where does one draw a line? Listen to this informative presentation by clicking on either one of the media buttons in the box above. You can download the MP3 file and load it onto your iPod or similar portable player device. |

| August 23, 2011. President of the University of Dubuque, Jeffrey Bullock and to his right, Mike Willis, Development Director, gave a stunning presentation on the new Performing Arts Center under construction near Chalmer's Field. It is magnificent. It will have a 1,000 seat state-of-the-art auditorium, classrooms, rehearsal halls, a hydraulically actuated stage and orchestra pit making the space adjustable for a variety of concerts and stage productions, and the structure, designed by Dubuque architects Straka Johnson, looks like a musical instrument, a pair of cellos lying on their sides. You simply must log on to UD's Website www.dbq.edu to see it for yourself. Listen to Jeffrey's presentation by clicking on one of the buttons at right. |

| August 8, 2011 Newly minted Rotarian, Dave Storey, gave a great presentation on his employer, the Telegraph Herald. Dave has been involved in advertising most of his life and been in the newspaper business through some of the most uncertain and tumultuous times in modern history. The story is, of course, the TH is not just a newspaper but a news aggregator that covers local news like nobody else can, and publishes that news any number of ways, including the Internet, radio and television and newsprint. There are some very interesting facts revealed in Dave's talk, and you'll have to listen to the recording we provided right here. |
 |
| Chad Miller was a guest of Sarah Tufty, both of FedEx, and upon noticing their FedEx badges, photographer Gary Olsen just happened to have a package he needed delivered. They not only agreed to take it (it was a request for funds from FedEx's charitable arm), but they would not accept payment. Wow, it's good to be a Rotarian. |
 |
| Bob Grierson had made a visit to a Rotary Club while on a vacation trip, and he brought back a flag. We have flags, and if you are planning on taking a trip and attending a Rotary meeting at your destination, by all means take and trade flags. |

| July 19, 2011 We say goodbye to our exchange students Javiera and Laurie this past week, and we will miss them terribly. Thanks to Rotarian Kim Buros and her family, our club was blessed with these extraordinary students. It is one of the best things that Rotary does in the word, provide these students with the opportunity to study in another country. There were tears shed during the presentations by the girls as they celebrated their year of study in the US. We provided some meaningful gifts, but the best gift of all is friendship which these students received in abundance. Listen to the audio. |

They are organizing another trip to Ecuador in the coming year. You can listen to Tim and Mary's presentation by clicking on the appropriate button at right. | Chris Corken, First Assistant County Attorney for Dubuque, Iowa |
July 5, 2011 An absolutely hardball presentation by Chris Corken, First Assistant County Attorney. She knows her trade, and her message is clear. If we took half the money we spend as a society on incarcerating criminals, and invested it in educating women how to be mothers, men how to be fathers, and children how to make the right choices in life, it would be a better investment of not just funds but human resources. Chris says we spend more on justice and jail than we do on education and community support services. But it's not just about money. It's about community support for young and particularly disadvantaged families. |

| June 28, 2011 Tanya Bottomley, our president for the past 12 months, and whose term was celebrated by a rollicking presentation by Craig Beytien (right), evoked a standing ovation for a great year and a great president. Jokes and a marvelous AV presentation made this meeting one of the most entertaining in our recent memory. The photos on this page attest to that, and we have them linked to enlargements you can download and print on your computer at home. And of course we have an audio of the entire proceedings and it's not to be missed. Just click on the appropriate button on the right, and you have this memory forever. June 21, 2011 Bob Eager standing right of our maharaja, Kent Renier (Kent traveled to India previously and in a weak moment bough this turbin) spoke on his recent trip to India, and he had some marvelous experiences and great photos he took of his adventure. He is now among the living proof that we are doing wonderful work around theworld in eradicating polio, the scourge of third world countries but industrialized nations as well. India has the largest and fastest growing educated middle class in the world, a prosperous economy, advanced medicines, but a population that is so dense and containing so much poverty, that it is difficult to to completely eradicate the disease. |

| June 7, 2011 Argaw Oremu, with Dan Koppes (right) and Tanya Bottomley (center) was our guest presenter this meeting. Sub-Sarahan Africa continues to present enormous challenges and opportunities for our Rotary Club as you will hear by Argaw's account of life in his homeland, where water is as precious as gold. What is the most prized possession? A simple ballpoint pen. Without it, how can there be school? Consider that the biggest challenge among American school children is can we afford to give them all laptops or tablets, and once we do, can we provide high speed network connections? This isn't even a dream or a concept one can grasp in most of Africa. The divide between those in the world that have and those that have not has become an abyss, but people like Don Koppes seem not afaid to look into that abyss. He has been to Africa, and he helped tell the story of a place few of us will ever see much less witness first hand. |

Plan to join us fr4om 8 AM to 12 noon, or even part of that time period. Ask Bob and Dan for details on how you can participate. |

| April 26, 2011 We learned all about Ghana, Africa and the water projects that are going on there on behalf of Rotary Club. John Mac is a Rotarian from Cedar Rapids, and he is on the far left. He has traveled to Africa, and he was made an honorary chief while in Ghana for his work in bringing clean water to villagers in that region. It's an amazing project because it is an excellent example of how Rotary Clubs can reach across the globe to unite members in a common cause for the betterment of those in need. Clean water is the number one means of fighting the devastating diseases that befall citizens and especially children in these countries on the west coast of Africa. Below, Father Michael Andre speaks to Rotarians about his country, In some regions, children can't attend school because they are standing in lines for hours waiting for their ration of water to bring home to their families. |

With him was Olga Tazberouk, a Russian immigrant who has made Dubuque her home. Olga spoke on what it's like coming to a new country, making a new home, learning a new language and navigating some of the hurdles her family had to negotiate. The audio file is fascinating because she is so interesting to listen to. |

March 1, 2011: We had a woinderful reunion and presentation with an old friend of Rotary Club, newly retired teacher, John Adelmann. John has completed the Shot Tower Book Project began when he was teaching at Centeral Alternative High School. He took all of the vast material that was generated about this famed icon of Dubuque's skyline, and put it into a book soon to be released. We will have plenty of opportunities to buy a copy. Over 900 have been sold in advance! Congratulations to John and this worthwhile project, telling the story of one of the most fascinating structures to survive more than 150 years of Dubuque history. |

A splendid history was revealed that goes back more than 150 years and parallels the settlement and growth of our great town. The good works of the sisters reaches globally. Known for their missions of education and health care, the sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary are located on their lovely campus at the end of Grandview Avenue overlooking the great river valley that is a lasting reminder of the wilderness that once existed here in the 19th Century that did not deter these strongwomen of faith from their noble mission. |

| January 11, 2011 We had a genuinely wonderful presentation by one of our Rotary Exchange Students, Javiera Alcaino (center with all the buttons and badges). She is a native of Chile, and she is a student at Senior High School this year. She gave a splendid presentation with photos from her country, and she provided us with some interesting views of her homeland. For example, there is wonderful skiing, trout fishing, and Chile,is a relatively long narrow country along the west coast of the South American contenent. It's as long as the US is wide. It is one of the top exporters of vegetables, fruit and some of the finest wine varieties in the world. Mining is also a major industry in Chile (recall the famous Chilean Miners' rescue). And Javiera also told about the earth quake and sunami she personally witnessed and survived while back home. It was the most terrifying experience of her life, and she describes it in great detail. Above, Javiera stands with her friend and host families. The assistant principal at Senior, Rick Colpitts is on the left. On the far right is Kim Buros who coordinates our exchange program for our Rotary Club. We have a great recording of the program. |
 |

 |
| Receiving her Paul Harris Award at this meeting was perhaps the youngest member ever to receive such a distinction, Kim Buros. |
 |
January 4, 2011 Perhaps a new tradition has been born on this the first meeting of the new year. The placesetting at the head table was without a guest, and it became clear to Eric Hilbun, our program coordinator, that we weren't going to have a featured speaker. So Eric decided to present a theme to the club members for discussion. "What do you have to be thankful for this past year?" Eric went first and began describing his critical heart surgery he had this past year and how that affected him emotionally and spiritually. Soon, the microphone was making the rounds. Above is one of those who spoke, Bob Eager. Words here cannot adequately describe what happened next. You'll just have to listen to the recording. |
|
 |
| We celebrated the newest Paul Harris Fellow, Jeff Nagle. |
 |
| Mike Lavin brought his wife, Roberta to a meeting. |

|
| December 28, 2010: Dr. Chuck Weber, dermatologist at Medical Associates, provided us with a talk about his trip to Nigeria, Africa recently on a Rotary sponsored medical mission. It was a compelling talk filled with details on the often strange dichotomy that is Africa. It is a culture and a continent struggling with ethnic and religious conflicts, enormous resources that the developing nations want to exploit, corruption, grinding poverty and sickness, yet most Africans that Dr. Weber encountered were remarkably well adjusted, industrious and caring people who seem to rise above it all. You simply must hear Dr. Weber's talk. Click on the appropriate button in the box on the right. |
