June 10, 2003: Bobby Earls, former anchor and television journalist for KWWL Channel 7, Waterloo, is originally from Maquoketa, Ia, and graduated from Loras. She is now working in the Development Office at the college. She tells some great stories about her broadcast career (28 minutes)

June 3, 2003 Paul Hemmer did a combination News and Fun & Frolic, and he managed to separate Ken Buesing from his cash. Above is a rare photo of Ken opening his wallet

John Kerrigan (right) confers with one of the Rotary District representatives who attened the annual Rotary Club New Member Social. There was a series of speakers from our club that described various aspects of membership, the club history, mission, traditions, and the importance of participation and the personal reward that it brings. Want to see an album of photos from the event at Four Mounds? Click here.
June 3, 2003 What a great photo! This is our excellent server and our birthday cake for the month of June. SwingFest Tickets Chair, Sue Wheaton, holds up one of the newly minted tickets letting members know that tickets will be distributed shortly. We are already collecting cash from conscientous members. Oh, and thanks for the lovely happy dollars, Sue! Spencer Smith. He'll be rounding up volunteers to help with event logistics.
Ms. Tully covers the scholarship list for club members. We gave out about $5,000 in scholarships? That's good!
After the meeting we went over to Mike Pratt's place to see how he was doing. He's probably on lots of pain killers, but he was able to greet us at the front door... so he's up and around which is nice. We're not quite sure, but we think the post surgery neck brace he has to wear is making him appear taller by an inch or two. Every cloud has a silver lining.

June 3, 2003: Don't worry, we have this speaker's program on our website. If you missed the live show because you had to be at the Chamber Annual Meeting, never fear. At least you can hear the audio which is wonderful. The featured speaker this week was a wonderfully descriptive presentation on Tommy "The Cork" Corcoran, the architect of Roosevelt's New Deal. Lynn Niznick, Public Relations and Student Enrollment coordinator for Holy Family Schools, did her doctorate dissertation at Notre Dame on the topic of this historic politician, who she personally met and ended up working for organizing his vast library of papers from the '20s, '30s and '40s. Listen to this excellent speaker by clicking on the button (about 28 minutes).

May 20, 2003 Angie Harter, Travel Agent, came to Rotary in late May with some travel tips in what is perceived to be troubled times, but Angie says there are lots of safe places to go in this big wide world. (about 18 minutes)
I apologize for not getting the name of this citizen representing Finley Hospital and standing next to Jim Schilling, chair of our popular SuperShot Saturday. Here he presents our guest with a nice check to help finance further SuperShot projects that immunize children in our community against the typical childhood diseases. --G.O.
Does anyone really do Fun & Frolic better than Bob Rudzianski? Sure, but we love him anyway. Here's the best part: the person he levies the most fine upon is himself. Now that's the spirit!
Jason Stecklein, Chemistry and Physics Instructor and chair of Dubuque County Democrats, is our newest member, and he received his Rotary Club pin from Mike Loveless as sponsor Rod Bakke looks on at ceremonies held during this meeting.
Jason addressed the membership for the first time as an official member of Rotary Club of Dubuque. Welcome Jason!
There were several guests this week at Rotary, and one perspective member who many members know already. Rob Apel, (formerly Advance DataCom now Fidelity Bank), was introduced by Warren Wick. In this picture, Rob swears to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Or maybe he's just waving.Give him a Bible anyway.
Past Presidents met with board members and interested Rotary members to discuss the state of the club. It was a very constructive affair with lots of great input that was collected over the last several days in anticipation of this meeting. John Kerrigan and past president, Jim O'Brien, discuss possible club improvements. Jim Schilling moderated the event. Click on the photo to see the album from the evening photogaphed by Gary Olsen.
Rob Rudzianski, chairman of the upcoming District Rotary Club Golf Outing at Thunder Hills, holds up what promises to be the quality collectible prize of the event, a glass and brass clock that will be custom engraved. Very classy. Hope you have signed up for this event. According to Bob, "We are at 72 people and have room for only a few more groups. For those clubs that signed up I want to thank you for having your club represented in this fun and great event. For those clubs that can not attend but e-mailed me, thank you for your courtesy in responding. Still would like to see you here for a great event and a great day. Thunder Hills C.C. is a wonderful course you won't forget. The cost is great! $50.00 for golf, cart, and a sit down dinner. We can not take any reservations after June 10th so let's put it on our calenders and make the move for a great time in Dubuque. Sign up is below: Click on the golf ball above and you are on your way. P.S. If you have signed up and have not sent in your money, please send it to Robert Rudzianski 10678 Eagle Ridge Ct., Peosta, IA 52068."

Penny and Corey Roeder spoke on a recent winter trip they took to a wolf study center dedicated to the preservation and return of wolves to the wild and located in Ely, Minnesota (within 10 miles of the Canadian border). The Roeders are not only a lovely and interesting couple, but they are members of our Rotary Club. The presentation involved images, however, the audio is not diminished one bit without them. The Roeders became interested in wolf behavior and preservation by observing their own family dogs. "Behaviors are exactly the same as wolves," says Corey, "and the experts agree that dogs are merely wolves that haven't grown up." (about 20 minutes).

Gary Gansemer did an excellent job of Fun & Frolic this week. His baseball trivia game brought out the Cub fans among our membership. Okay, we must comment on his new "Matt Lauer" hair cut. Any shorter, and he might as well ask the barber for a shave and shave.
Dear Rotarians:

I hope that you are doing well. I had to change plans at the last minute and went to New York instead of China. I changed my ticket and will now go to China through Shanghai on June 15. Hopefully this plan can go through.

Presently I am working at Brookhaven National Lab and, as always, it is a great experience. Part of my work is to attend the Metropoletean Museum !!!! I just love it in every aspect.

I'm attending the Rotary Club at West Hampton Beach. It is interesting. They collect a lot of "fine" money money They meet in "The Beach" restaurant overlooking the ocean. But, they're no fun like the Dubuque club and neither as dedicated or organized. I miss you all.

May 13th, 2003 - Trish McDonald Myers, Volunteer Coordinator at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, speaks on the volunteer opportunities there. Trish is one of those career people who grew up in Dubuque, left to live in Washington, DC, and then returned to her home town to do this job. She and her job are fascinating. Plus, she was a welcome difference from our traditional spokesperson on the America's River Project, Jerry Enzler. The message, which you can hear for yourself by pressing this button, is quite clear: volunteers are an important resource for an enterprise such as this, and from the numbers of those who have already expressed interest in joining her team of hosts, presenters, interpreters, etc., it looks like she has been successful evangelizing the volunteer ethic. (Her talk is about 20 minutes)

Brent Johns holds up the visual of the America's River complex for Trish McDonald Meyers' presentation.

There are 144 muscles in the human face, and it's amazing how many expressions the face is cable of portraying. Case in point, Tom Reilly is apparently using just a few of his muscles right now, but president of Rotary Club, Kevin Lynch, is using muscles we don't think he was aware of. What a great expression. Click on it to see the enlargement. One wonders what he was thinking about.
Spencer Smith and Mike Loveless are making a point in this photo. If any of you Rotarians have one or more of these aprons tucked away in your house or car, get them turned in. We need them. Also any signs you may have in your garage or basement or a Rotary event nature. We need them. And if we see any barbecue sauce or mustard on these aprons, well, there will some form of fresh heck to pay.

Gene Gullikson, Dubuque Carnegie-Stout Public Library, spoke on behalf of Empower Dubuque, a new organization in Dubuque that is focusing on raising the standards of early child care. Gene did an excellent job and is quite a trooper considering we had paramedics and EMT personnel in the back of the room ministering to Jim O'Brien who apparently experienced a sudden drop in blood pressure and fainted. Emergency personnel were there within 10 minutes and took him to the hospital with Kerin Moldenhauer accompanying him. He seemed to be okay, but hopefully an update on his condition will be available soon.
May 6, 2003 : Remember when Barb O'Hea of Northeast Iowa Community College made a presentation several months ago seeking funds for the NICC Child Development Center? She returned to our Rotary Club meeting to distribute these invitations to everyone to attend the Ground Breaking for the Center on May 14th, at 12 noon on the Peosta campus. Let's go and help them turn a shovel or two!
We were visited by Galena Rotarian, Jim Darling, and he paid a "Happy Dollar" in appreciation of the Galena's recent Auction which netted them $40,000! Don just wanted to "thank Dubuque businesses, without whom we could never be as successful."
Bob Rudzianski, chair of the Rotary District Golf Outing, June 16th, tells members of the excellent response by area clubs, and he encourages everyone to get their groups together and make reservations. See the item below for links to more information. Rod Bakke addresses everyone on the topic of the upcoming SwingFest, and he runs down the now long sponsor list. This will be first year for the popular summertime music event to be held July 12 at the Alliant Center on the Riverfront. Want to see the poster you can download of the event and see information on the talent lineup? Click here.
