Program Information
Community Service Events for Which Rotary Club is Responsible Community Service: Human and Community Development Projects conducted by the Rotary Club of Dubuque have had a wide impact on our community. Periodically, the club has awarded monetary grants to organizations and groups in the community to assist them in carrying out their service missions. A specific committee within the Club invites grant applications, studies their purpose, goals and potential impact, and decides which applicants deserve financial support. Mississippi River Walk development: In 1997 the Rotary Club of Dubuque voted approval of a pledge to provide $50,000.00 in financial and in kind support for the purpose of constructing a pavilion in the proposed Mississippi. As of now construction has started and is expected to be finished this fall. River Walk Development area. This ambitious commitment signifies the Club's support of the Mississippi River development, which has progressed significantly. Through fundraising efforts during the past three years, the Rotary Club of Dubuque has made significant progress in raising this financial pledge and it is hoped that the goal of $50,000.00 could be realized in the 2001-2002 Rotary year. As of now construction has started and is expected to be finished this fall. Roadside cleanups - Rotarians volunteer to walk the roadsides in the Dubuque area picking up trash and garbage. Following this effort, the workers gather for a social and meal. Normally, at the next Rotary meeting following this activity, there is a humorous report of the strange items collected along the highway during the cleanup. Salvation Army Projects - The Rotary Club of Dubuque enjoys supporting the activities of the Dubuque Salvation Army. Generally, for the past several years, Rotarians have volunteered to "ring the bells" for the Salvation Army. Recently, on December 23, 2000, volunteers from Rotary helped to collect $4,300.00 during their day with the Bells. Another project involving the Salvation Army and Rotary involves the purchase and distribution of toys to needy children in the community. During the past Holiday Season, Rotarians donated approximately $4,000.00 of toys to the Salvation Army's "Toys for needy children" campaign. High School Scholarships - Each year, the Rotary Club of Dubuque provides scholarships funds to Community High Schools for selected seniors who are going on to college. Generally, $5,000.00 in scholarships, are awarded by the Rotarians and these funds are raised during each weekly Rotary meeting. Scholarships recipients are chosen by officials at the local High Schools. The Rotary Club of Dubuque does not select the recipients. Awards of the scholarships are made during the award ceremonies held at each High School in late spring. |
